Summer 2008

If you count all your assets, you always show a profit. --Robert Quillen

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it --William Arthur Ward

As we look to enjoying the wonderful foods and activities of Summer, we in the construction industry always have one eye focused on the workings of the kitchen. A good part of the kitchen workings, of course, is the countertops...so this month we explore -
TODAY’S WOOD COUNTERTOPS: Beyond Butcher Block

Real wood counter surfaces bring natural elegance, distinction, and warmth to kitchens and baths, no matter what the style of your home. Wood fell out of favor decades ago, as seemingly more sanitary surfaces were developed. It is now understood that wood countertops, when properly cared for (using mineral oil, not animal-based oil), are both long-lasting and sanitary. And they are enjoying a well-deserved resurgence as homeowners are searching for uniqueness in design.

Wood countertops allow for wonderful design flexibility. Start with a wide selection of woods to choose from; with grain placement you can really show off the beauty of the material. Almost infinite finish choices and edge shapes make for a truly unique design element. You can add a surfacing option, such as antiquing, wire brushing, and hand planed. Wood countertops can be thick and substantial or thin and sleek. And—good to know—many sustainable woods make great countertops. Add an integrated drain board, custom knife slots, or a built-in cooktop or trivet and functionality also rules in the kitchen.

With any wood, but especially with wood countertops, a sealant is required and it should be periodically re-oiled. A good sealant keeps the natural moisture balance of the wood, but keeps spills and surface water out. This is especially important if a sink incorporated into the counter is planned. Use soap and water or a mild detergent for cleaning. For the inevitable stains or scratches, a bit of sanding and sealing or refinishing does the trick.

Remember: no two pieces of wood are exactly alike. So, if you’re looking for something that will truly be unique in your kitchen, bath or bar, consider wood as an attractive yet effective option.

Toolbox From The Toolbox....

Do you own a drill? We thought so. This bit sharpener is the perfect partner for your most oft-used tool.

The Drill Doctor proved to be the perfect medicine for my worn out bits. It revived the worst bit I had in my drawer and will cure the ills of my poorly-designed bits when it's time to send them to surgery.
